Although social networks dominate users’ mobile app time, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram now face tough competition from messaging applications. With the introduction of chatbots and fast payments, it’s messengers that shape current social media trends. Here’s the proof.
Current trends in social media & why messengers reign supreme
Messengers: the next social media frontier
Back in 2014 Mark Zuckerberg said[3] that messaging was one of the few things that people did more than social networking – and that’s the reason why Facebook has acquired WhatsApp for $ 19 billion and created a messaging app with one billion users. As of now, 2.5 billion people have at least one messaging app installed on their smartphones. Ted Livingstone, the founder of Kik, has even compared messengers to browsers (with chatbots taking the role of new websites). Guess why? Messaging apps (and bots in particular) reduce a user’s journey to a purchase, ensure privacy and improve customer services. However, they won’t replace social networks anytime soon. The R-Style Lab team believes the two media will continue to evolve hand in hand until new technologies (like VR social networking) appear on the market. After all, there are no photo filters in WhatsApp – and that’s exactly what we like about Instagram.
